Artist's Statement:
Wanting to notice well some specific long views , events such as field meeting lawn, road wending across rocky ridge and the slow shifts in the open sky, I have painted outdoors many summers. This was frequently in Maine, but also in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and was at times even in deep winter. This practice has uncelebrated percs: standing alone for hours out there you see movements of air, passages of animals and birds, flutter of texture and glisten of green and grey that fill one up.

In recent years I have taken to using Sumi on watercolor paper in the
studio. Taking photographs of natural details such as water surfaces,
ground textures and woods interiors, I use these as resources for large ink
wash drawings. It is vital that I still go out into the woods and beside the
rivers, both for the authenticity of the drawings and for my own being.
